Maine Wood Woolies by Helene Rush
paperback, 77 pages, 1986

Puffins and Penguins and Whales, oh my!
Also bears, deer, moose, sheep, and more—a Noah's ark full of animals posed for this charming designer collection of children's sweaters and related knitwear. In addition to the furred and feathered, other subjects of Down East significance include sailboats, lighthouses, sprigs of blueberries, and, of course, pine trees. Traditional and custom designs such as Aran, Fair Isle, Sampler, Tree of Life, and others appear too, extending the number of patterns to 30.
"Quick to knit" is the collection's main theme. All the patterns use worsted or bulky weight wool, so they "work up" rapidly. Styles are varied too: drop shoulder, raglan, or set-in-sleeves; crew, boat, turtleneck, or placket necklines; buttoned, zipped, or pullover. And perhaps best of all, instead of the three sizes usually offered in magazine patterns, directions are included for a whole range of sizes from infant to 12 years.

Montreal-born Helene Rush lives with her husband and three children in North Windham, Maine, and has been designing original handknits for several years. Her designs have been published in such magazines as Better Homes & Gardens, Knitting with Simplicity, and Country Handcrafts. She also teaches knitting and design, and consulted with other mothers in her classes to learn what they wanted and needed most in children's sweaters and outerwear. The delightful results will warm kids everywhere —not just in the Maine woods!
